A pioneer in climbing

The real story begins a few years back. In 1957, climber Yvon Chouinard was just 19 when he began manufacturing climbing pitons. He felt that the pitons on the market were not strong enough. At the same time, he was building steel carabiners in a small workshop in his parents' backyard. He then sold his accessories from the boot of his van. Thus was born Chouinard Equipment Ltd.

Chouinard, who also founded the famous Patagonia brand in 1973, played a major role in the birth of modern climbing. With old equipment damaging the rock, the young company began designing equipment for clean climbing. This style of climbing leaves the wall intact after the ascent and does not damage the rock. The company soon grew to become the leading supplier of climbing equipment.

The birth of Black Diamond

Unfortunately, Chouinard Equipment Ltd went bankrupt in the late 1980s. It was bought out by employees and customers of the brand. In 1989, the company is renamed Black Diamond Equipment. The brand moves its headquarters from Ventura (California) to Salt Lake City (Utah) to be closer to the mountains and their many activities: climbing, skiing, trail-running, trekking, mountaineering...

Black Diamond has pursued its development while remaining true to its guiding principle: to remain a pioneer in its field while remaining ethically committed. Climbing is still its core business, but the company has greatly expanded its range of hiking equipment, with headlamps, trekking poles, backpacks and even tents.

Today, Black Diamond Equipment has an international presence (notably in Europe since 1996) and continues to support numerous organizations such as Leave No Trace, The Nature Conservancy and the Outdoor Industry Foundation.
