Titanium, stainless steel or aluminium: what's the best material for cooking on the trails?
Toaks Outdoor is a brand specialising in ultralight cooking equipment for outdoor activities, including hiking, bivouacking and bikepacking. Its range includes stoves, frying pans and cutlery, but its flagship product is the kettle. Discover Toaks Outdoor.
What is a Toaks stove?
A kettle is a container used for cooking or heating water outdoors. Toaks has made this its speciality by designing titanium kitchens.
Toaks Outdoor has become the specialist in titanium cooking pots. Its range is divided into two parts: Toaks and Toaks Light. Toaks Light stoves (0.3 mm) are thinner than Toaks stoves. The Toaks Light range is lighter but less shock-resistant.
Here are two examples of moths designed by the Toaks brand:
In addition to these two ranges, Toaks cooking pots are available in capacities ranging from 380 ml to 2000 ml. There are capacities of 450 ml, 550 ml, 750 ml... All have a retractable handle to take up as little space as possible in the bag. Some models are available with or without a lid. Others have a handle for hanging over a campfire.
Why choose Toaks?
Titanium has a number of advantages when it comes to hiking. Compared with aluminium and stainless steel, titanium is much lighter, which considerably reduces the overall weight of the rucksack. Light means easier travel and less fatigue.
What's more, titanium heats up quickly while maintaining good heat distribution. It also cools just as quickly, so there's less risk of burns. You can stow your Toaks in your bag as soon as you've finished your meal.

Another advantage is that it's quick and easy to clean. A cloth with water is all you need when you're out trekking. If you're at home, you can even put your Toaks in the dishwasher. Note that this is not the case for all titanium products. If you have a titanium product from another brand, make sure it's dishwasher-safe.
What's more, Toaks products have no coating and are BPA-free. Non-stick coatings can release toxic chemicals when heated to high temperatures. As for the absence of Bisphenol-A (BPA), this ensures that your food stays safe.
Tips and tricks for use
Here are a few tips on Toaks mugs:
- The 380 ml pots are suitable for one person and will be used more as a cup for drinking coffee or tea.
- From 450 ml upwards, their capacity is sufficient to heat water for one person. Perfect for preparing a freeze-dried meal!
- Above 750 ml, Toaks can be used for two people.
- If you're going away with your family, choose a kettle with a capacity of more than a litre. There is even a 2-litre size.
- To make the most of the space available, pack everything you can into the pot: gas cartridge, stove, cloth, etc.
- Wash your gourd quickly after use to prevent food from drying out and sticking.
- Take a 750 ml canteen if you're used to eating freeze-dried food and drinking coffee, so that you can heat all the water you need in one go. A 550 ml pot will do, depending on how much water you need for a freeze-dried product.
- Don't forget to use the graduations on your water bottle to measure out the water for your rehydration dishes.
- Avoid counterfeits. Titanium is often of lower quality and is not always guaranteed BPA-free.
- If you're cooking over a wood fire, opt for a model with a handle so you can hang it over the fire.
Conclusion
Over the years, Toaks has become a benchmark in the outdoor world, particularly in ultra-light walking. The lightness of their packs and their durability are real assets. The entire range is guaranteed for life against manufacturing and material defects. Proof of quality!
