Survival Guide [1/8]: How to Store and Preserve Your Water
Water is one of the most important modules in a crisis situation, so it makes sense to start our 8-chapter survival guide with this topic.
On average, a French person consumed 149 liters of water per day in 2020, a relatively stable figure compared to 147 liters per day in 2012, according to the French government. But what happens in an emergency or survival situation?
When a natural disaster strikes, you need water not only for hydration but also for hygiene. It’s also essential for cooking (whether it’s simple pasta or freeze-dried meals in your food stock), washing clothes, maintaining hygiene, and providing first aid. Discover our tips for storing water, whether it’s drinkable or not.

How Much Water Should I Store?
In emergency situations, you don’t need as much water as in daily life. A supply of 10 liters of water per day per person is sufficient for hydration, basic hygiene, cooking, and hand-washing a few clothes.
In addition to potable water, consider equipping yourself with water filters and treatment solutions, such as Micropur tablets, to purify water and extend its storage life.
Tips for Storing Water
- Portable Containers: At home, large barrels are ideal for water storage. In case of evacuation, aim to have around 20 liters of portable water with you; jerrycans work well for this purpose.
- Color Coding: Blue containers are darker and restrict light, limiting algae growth in water. Red barrels are generally used for fuel.
- Use Clean Containers: Avoid using glass bottles or jars. Plastic bottles are biodegradable and may degrade over time, while glass can break easily.
- Start with Clean Water: This ensures longer storage life and reduces the need for treatment.
- Treat Water When Using It: It’s better to purify water as you use it rather than when you store it.
- Avoid Sunlight: Store water away from direct sunlight.
- Use Pallets: Place containers on pallets to avoid contact with floor chemicals.
- Rotate Your Supply Annually: Replace stored water every year.
We also offer water in pouches with a shelf life of up to 5 years, compared to the 2-year shelf life of bottled water. These water pouches come in various formats depending on the brand. Their packaging ensures they are easy to store and maintain a long shelf life even in unfavorable conditions (heat, cold, etc.). Additionally, they are easy to transport in a 72-hour emergency kit or evacuation bag

Micropur Classic, made with silver ions, allow you to safely preserve potable water for up to 6 months by preventing the proliferation of algae, germs, or unpleasant odors.
Micropur Forte, like Micropur Classic, also contain silver ions but include chlorine as well. Micropur Forte not only purifies clear water to make it drinkable but also preserves it for 6 months. If the water is too turbid, a water filter should be used in addition to Micropur Forte
