2023 Comparison of Black Diamond Headlamps

April 2022 - Updated in April 2023

Are you looking to buy a headlamp but feeling overwhelmed by the many options available? Discover our comparison table of Black Diamond headlamps in 2023.

Until 2022, the American brand mainly offered battery-powered headlamps. For battery-operated use, a separate purchase was required. The current range now includes models with built-in batteries, which we will present in this article.

Black Diamond Headlamp Comparison

This table compares the 2023 Black Diamond catalog, including the latest models and the new series: the R series. This series includes the Astro 300-R, Cosmo 350-R, Spot 400-R, and Storm 500-R. These are rechargeable headlamps with a Repreve® recycled fiber strap.

The Astro 300, Cosmo 350, Spot 400, Storm 450, and Icon 700 are part of the Dual Fuel range. These models come with a set of batteries but can also operate with the BD 1500 battery (sold separately, except for the Icon 700), offering maximum flexibility.

The Sprinter 500 and Onsight 375 are special Dual Fuel headlamps. These two models are compatible with the rechargeable BD 1800 battery (sold separately). They are designed for specific activities.

The Sprinter 500 is ideal for trail running. It is lightweight, compact, and balanced, to the point of being almost unnoticeable on your head. Its focused beam allows for long-distance vision, and a rear flasher makes you visible to vehicles.

The Onsight 375 is designed for climbing. Simple and robust, it has a Climbing mode optimized for illuminating handholds or the rock face in front of you. The Route-Finder mode helps identify belays and trails from a distance.

Finally, the last model is the Flare. This ultra-light headlamp is perfect for emergency situations. Robust and compact, it fits in a car glove compartment, a zippered pocket in a chalk bag, or an evacuation kit. Its red flashing mode is ideal for alerting rescuers in case of trouble.

What is PowerTap™ Technology?

PowerTap™ is a feature developed by Black Diamond. To achieve maximum brightness, simply press the side of the headlamp. Conversely, if the brightness is already at maximum, pressing the side of the headlamp will reduce it to a more moderate level.

What is the difference between a wide beam and a focused beam?

A wide beam spreads light over a close distance. It’s ideal for static or low-dynamic activities (camping, reading, etc.). A focused beam concentrates the light for long-distance illumination. It is better for dynamic activities requiring far vision (trail running, mountaineering, skiing, biking, etc.).

Several Black Diamond models feature both beam types. This versatility is perfect for hiking or those practicing multiple outdoor activities.

What are the 6 available settings?

Most headlamps have 6 settings available on the casing:

  • Maximum power in proximity mode
  • Maximum power in long-range mode
  • Adjustable intensity
  • Flashing
  • Red night vision
  • Lock mode

What is digital locking?

Black Diamond headlamps feature a "Lock" function to prevent accidental activation when stored or packed in your backpack. To activate it, simply press a button (instructions are in the manual). Only the Flare model has a manual lock.

What does IP67 and IPX4 mean?

These are international standards that measure a product's waterproofing. "IP" stands for protection index. The first digit refers to protection against solids like dust, and the second digit refers to protection against water intrusion. The higher the number, the better the protection. When the product has not been tested, the number is replaced by an "X". For more details, here is an article on protection ratings (IP).

For example, a headlamp with an IP67 rating means it is completely protected against dust and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter deep. IPX4-rated headlamps are resistant to water splashes, such as snow or rain showers. However, the solid protection has not been tested, hence the "X".
