Our tips for maintaining and storing your camping mattress

To extend the life of your mattress, it is highly recommended to clean it after a hike or any other outdoor activity. This helps prevent the development of mold as well as the gradual degradation of materials caused by sunscreen or food, for example.

Rest assured, it doesn't take much time. Additionally, maintenance can be done when you return from a trek. It is not necessary to clean your camping mattress after every night when you store it in its carry bag.

After cleaning, proper storage is also important. The goal is to avoid deformation or contact with any abrasive objects.

Cleaning an inflatable or self-inflating mattress

Bad Practices
Before cleaning your mattress, there are some practices to avoid if you don’t want to damage it. First and foremost, never wash your hiking mattress in a washing machine. Detergents are too harsh, the valve could break, and water might seep into the mattress. In short, your hiking mattress will be ruined.

Second, it’s not recommended to remove dust or crumbs with a vacuum cleaner. Instead, follow the methods below rather than using a device that could damage your mattress if mishandled.

Good Practices
A hiking mattress should sometimes be cleaned directly at your campsite. This is necessary if it comes into contact with aggressive substances, such as insect repellent. Simply rinse it with water and dry it with your towel.

Additionally, if pine sap falls on your mattress, it’s best to remove it with an alcohol-soaked wipe, which you can keep in your first aid kit. While not harmful, sap can attract other debris, such as thorns or small pebbles, which can be abrasive.

Here are the recommended instructions from top manufacturers such as Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit, and NEMO Equipment:

  • Inflate the mattress fully.
  • Close the valve properly. If not, water may seep into the mattress and could cause mold to develop.
  • Use a cloth, sponge, or soft-bristled brush with a mild cleaner (such as Marseille soap).
  • Rinse the mattress with water.
  • Dry it in the shade to avoid UV exposure, which can be damaging to the fabric.
  • Once dry, deflate it and store it until your next adventure.

Properly storing your hiking mattress

While Hiking
In the era of ultralight hiking, it is still important to keep the storage sack that comes with your inflatable mattress. Yes, it adds a few extra grams compared to just using an elastic band, but it helps protect your mattress from sharp objects that might be in your backpack, such as your stove branch or knife.

For a self-inflating mattress, just like an inflatable mattress, keep it in your bag. Again, this is to avoid contact with tree branches or rocks. However, be careful that it doesn’t come into contact with your Swiss knife or tent stakes.

Finally, avoid folding your mattress in the same direction every time. Otherwise, the fabric might be damaged at the folds. By following these recommendations, proper storage shouldn’t degrade your hiking mattress.

At Home
After cleaning your mattress, ensure it is completely dry. Then, leave the valve open to allow any trapped moisture to escape and prevent it from staying in the mattress. Store it in a dry place, avoiding unheated areas such as garages or basements. Opt for a closet or drawer instead.

For a self-inflating mattress, leave it partially inflated. This is better for air circulation and prevents the foam from being constantly compressed, helping it maintain its ability to inflate during your outdoor trips. For inflatable mattresses, it’s better to leave them unfolded. If not, periodically change the direction of the folds, just as you would during your hikes.

Lastly, before heading out on a trek, don’t forget to test your mattress. It would be unfortunate to discover a hole on your first night camping.

By following all these recommendations, you’ll extend the life of your gear. These techniques work for all inflatable and self-inflating mattresses, such as the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite or the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT.
