Water Treatment by Katadyn

Katadyn water filters are equipped with various filtration systems to ensure safe drinking water in all circumstances, whether you're traveling in a campervan, hiking, or at a base camp. There are three main systems: ceramic, activated carbon, and fiberglass. Here is what each offers:

Ceramic

Ceramic filters have a microporous structure impregnated with silver particles to inhibit bacterial growth. The pore size in ceramic filters is crucial, and this is where Katadyn ceramics stand out: each pore measures 0.2 microns (0.0002 mm). Since bacteria range in size from 0.3 to 1.5 microns and protozoa from 1 to 100 microns, this ensures perfect filtration. Additionally, a ceramic filter can be mechanically regenerated, and its filtration capacity is measurable. In cases of viral contamination, it is recommended to complement the filter's action with Micropur Forte.

Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is valued for its ability to retain harmful organic and inorganic substances in water. It also helps remove unpleasant odors and tastes. Activated carbon eliminates pesticides (e.g., lindane-DDT), trihalomethanes (THMs), nitrates, etc., by binding these substances to its particles. However, activated carbon granules cannot be regenerated.

Fiberglass

Some filters are made using a very fine fiberglass material layered between two supports. The pore size is 0.3 microns, effectively trapping bacteria and protozoa mechanically. The flexibility of fiberglass and the filter's lamellar design increase the filtration surface area and the retention capacity for residues.

Micropur Tablets

Katadyn also offers a water treatment method that doesn’t require filters: Micropur tablets. Composed of chemical agents, silver, chlorine, or iodine, these tablets treat water and/or preserve it for extended periods.

Silver

Silver ions are attracted to bacteria via polar absorption, penetrating their membranes and damaging their DNA, thereby halting bacterial growth. The respiratory system of the bacteria is then disrupted, leading to a chain reaction and eventual death. Micropur tablets contain silver ions, allowing water to be preserved for up to 6 months. Micropur Forte also includes chlorine for water disinfection.

Chlorine

Chlorine is the most commonly used chemical water treatment worldwide. It is fast-acting and has a broad range of applications. However, it does not preserve water, requires precise dosing, and its storage may pose challenges in some cases.

Iodine

Iodine, like chlorine, belongs to the halogen family and has a similar range of applications. It is easier to store and less dependent on pH levels. However, it has the drawback of leaving an unpleasant taste in the water. To address this, Katadyn combines iodine treatment with an activated carbon filter to eliminate this issue.
